If you haven’t already guessed, I’m talking about the beautiful country of Belgium! I was lucky enough to visit Belgium over Christmas and I was so impressed I couldn’t wait to share some holiday snaps with you guys! The original reason why I was so eager to visit Belgium around Christmas was because of the amazing Christmas markets and along with the fact that Christmas is a great excuse to eat your body weight in chocolate - where better to do it?! However when I arrived I realised that there was so much more to Belgium than I originally thought, don’t get me wrong the Christmas markets were amazing but it was the beautiful buildings and gorgeous food that really won me over!
I stayed in Ghent – a port city in northwest Belgium, I had read a lot about Ghent before I visited and I’d heard that it’s almost Belgium’s forgotten gem but just as beautiful as Brussels – the reviews were right it’s such a beautiful city! Full of history, culture and great cafes it’s definitely worth a visit! I’d recommend going up the Belfry of Ghent, the views are amazing and you can see for miles and grab some great pictures! There’s also so many great restaurants serving local cuisine my favourite being ‘T Vrij Dags Gevoel located in Vrijdagmarkt square, they serve the famous Carbonades Flamandes (better known as Flemmish Stew) which is a beef stew made with Belgian beer – it’s to die for! We also tried the traditional Cuberdon which is a cone shaped, raspberry flavoured jelly sweet with a harder outer shell and gooey middle – so delicious!
We also visited the gorgeous city of Bruges, famous for its cobbled streets, medieval building and amazing chocolate shops. Bruges is full of lovely little souvenir shops and the perfect place for chocolate tasting! We found so many little boutiques all dressed up for Christmas it was amazing! There’s also a lot of cool bars and restaurants in Bruges and they’re a lot busier than Ghent so there’s a really cool atmosphere and a great excuse to try one of Belgium's many beers.
You can’t visit Belgium without taking a trip to the capital – Brussels! Named as one of Europe’s most beautiful cities it’s definitely worth a visit! It’s such a cool city, with great street art and loads of culture it’s such a great place! The tube system makes it easy to get around and the cobbled streets are just bursting with shops, restaurants and boutique hotels! Whilst in Brussels we made sure we had a large cone full of Belgium Frites (or chips to the rest of us) and of course a chocolate smothered waffle!
I completely fell in love with Belgium and I would love to go back again, so I would definitely recommend it!
